How to View a Lunar Eclipse

1)set multiple alarms

2)wake up repeatedly to check time so you don’t miss aforementioned alarms

3)wake up AGAIN five minutes before alarms

4)fumble around in the dark putting on the  pants, fuzzy socks and winter coat you’ve laid out in anticipation of getting vertical before 4 am

5)slide into the nearest shoes

6)whisper loudly (rather than shouting) to stop command on your Alexa device (third alarm) so you don’t wake your husband

7)fly out of the door and become a little giddy, discovering the stars are clearly visible (for a change) during a nighttime sky event

8)stand in awe under a fabulous orange moon with just a sliver of impossibly bright nightlight shining from its left edge

9)be surprised by a shooting star

10)run quickly back up the stairs to wake husband with plea to “come see the orange moon!”

11)watch a once in almost 600 year celestial event together

12)have husband ask how long you’re going to stare at the moon

13)return to bedroom (with bed hair still artfully piled on head) to have husband (who is now getting ready for work) note helpfully that you actually could have seen the orange moon from the bedroom window 😂

Rock Bottom

It’s not easy being a bystander

watching the moorings slip

as the vessel bobs uncertainly in the water.

Is it going under?

It’s not easy remaining silent

when the volume of insanity becomes deafening.

Drowning out all sense and decency

and the tiny fragments of altruism

still caught in the clenched fists

of those who have yet to abandon hope.

Are we going under?

It’s not easy turning  my back

to the little lives I’ve loved and protected

as the inconceivable happens.

As indignant parents-

MOTHERS

start clambering for the right

to make their own children

less safe.

They’re going under.
